Which client characteristics influence coaching efficacy?

As the body of coaching research continues to expand, we professionals are gaining a more complete understanding of the coaching process and especially the factors that influence its efficacy. Much research investigates the coaching behaviours that have the greatest positive impact on successful outcomes. Another key factor, which undoubtedly influences coaching efficacy and remains under-researched, is the characteristics of clients that impact coaching effectiveness.

 

This article highlights a recent study that systemically reviewed the current research on client characteristics that determine the effectiveness of workplace coaching. It identifies a list of influential client characteristics and makes some suggestions for how coaches might use this research to inform their practice.
