What do coaches need to know about managerial coaching?

The manager as coach is fast becoming an expectation, rather than an ideal in contemporary organisational workplaces. Once seen as a strategy for performance management, managerial coaching is now moving into the realms of employee transformation, growth and empowerment. More and more, managers are equipping themselves with the skills to coach their direct reports.

This issue of Coaching Research in Practice explores a recent study into the relationship between managerial coaching, employee work engagement and organisational learning culture. With the added considerations of self-efficacy and workload, the findings presented in this article can be used by professional coaches to position themselves strategically to work with (rather than compete against) the current managerial coaching demand.
