What difference does the coach’s self-awareness make?

Self-awareness is both an ingredient in and an outcome of coaching. It is recognised within the ICF Core Competencies and also identified as key to coaching outcomes throughout the body of coaching research.
Despite this, self-awareness is still underrated in coach training and practice alike, as there is a consistent focus on technical skill development and a persistent lack of focus on self-awareness.
This issue of Coaching Research in Practice reviews a recent research paper that explores the role of self-awareness in coach development. It identifies the impact of coaches’ self-awareness, identifies four stages of developing self-awareness and makes some recommendations for coaches to expand their self-awareness
