The process of taking action in coaching

Clients taking action is an important coaching process and integral to facilitating learning in coaching. Action stems from the client’s learning, and the application of learning is in fact, a form of accountability, as the coach holds their client accountable to their learning. Once learning is identified, coaches and clients design and agree on different forms of action that may take the form of reflection, to discover and extend self-knowledge, follow-up, to build on emergent self-knowledge, preparation, to prepare clients to take difficult action or application, to apply and consolidate self-knowledge.

Thus, the process of taking action in coaching not only serves to apply emergent learning, but also provides a context for further discovery and learning. In addition, clients taking action paves the way for the full integration of learning.
