How do coaching clients take responsibility during the coaching process?
In coaching, clients experience a process of taking responsibility. They take responsibility for their situation, the coaching outcomes and their learning. This process is often referred to as ‘owning’, as clients make choices based on what they learn about themselves and their situations. The choices support the changes they want to see, and the choices let go of those aspects of themselves that do not align with those changes, as well as what they learn about themselves. Clients often feel a sense of liberation or ‘becoming free’ at this point, and results in them feeling more confident in themselves.
The process of taking responsibility is illustrated below:

Importantly, the process of taking responsibility frequently results in clients coaching themselves. Not only do they integrate into themselves what they learn during coaching, but they also integrate key coaching processes into their everyday living.
