Coaching supervision – how much do you need?

Posted on: 14 Mar 2019

At long last, it seems a larger body of coaches is reaching a higher level of professional maturity.

In particular, more and more coaches seem to be finally moving from the question of “What is coaching supervision?” and whether it is necessary to how much coaching supervision is necessary.

The Association for Coaching (AC) recommends different amounts of supervision depending on your coaching experience. For “Foundation” coaches, the AC recommends a minimum ratio of 1 hour of coaching supervision for every 15 hours of coaching practice. For “Professional” coaches, this changes to 1 hour per 30 hours of coaching practice, and for “Master” coaches a ratio of 1/40 (for more info click here).

Along the same lines, the European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC) “believes that coaches/mentors should undertake no less than 1 hour of supervision per 35 hours of practice, ensuring a minimum of 4 hours per year, evenly distributed if possible” (for more info click here). Thus, if you’re a full time coach, you should be having a session of coaching supervision every week. If you’re spending half your working week coaching, then you need one a fortnight and if you’re a quarter-timer, then one session a month.

Consider this now:

Are you a Foundation, Professional or Master level coach?

Are you doing an appropriate amount of supervision for your experience level?

The ReciproCoach supervision offerings allow you to access group coaching supervision sessions as you need them – on a casual or ongoing basis.

Regular coaching supervision is becoming a professional minimum (that’s why the ReciproCoach Professional membership includes 3 sessions), and it’s only a matter of time before it becomes mandated across the board.

But who likes doing anything because they have to?

The good news is that most people find the ReciproCoach group supervision sessions so juicy, that they participate again because they want to, rather than because they have to. Plus, if you’re an ICF credential holder, you can claim CCEUs for coaching supervision sessions (for more info click here).

Is it time for you to top up your coaching supervision tank? Sessions are limited to 5 participants, so don’t wait for the registration closing date – join a session or round today.
