Coach the Person, Not the Problem: Are you stopping short of real coaching breakthroughs?
We’ve all heard about the importance of coaching the who rather than the what. Yet it’s one thing to know and quite another to actually do, especially when you’ve been trained to coach for solutions to problems (the what), and even more so when that’s what your clients expect.
The result of coaching the problem, rather than the person, according to Dr Marcia Reynolds, MCC, author of Coach the Person, Not the Problem, and WBECS Breakthrough Coaching thought-leader, is that you wind up stopping short of real coaching breakthroughs. Marcia says, “Masterful coaching is simpler than you think, when you know how to coach the person, not the problem”.
We don’t want ReciproCoaches to be stopping short of real coaching breakthroughs, and we want to see consistently masterful coaching across our profession, so we’ve teamed up with Marcia to fast track your focus on coaching the person, rather than the problem, through a combined peer coaching/training round.

In our Coach the Person, Not the Problem Combination Training/Peer Coaching Round, you’ll learn how to take your coaching out of the transactional realm and break through to transformation. It will scaffold your reading of Marcia’s Coach the Person, Not the Problem book (available for purchase separately here – not included in the peer coaching round) and guide you to apply and experience your learning incrementally in six coaching sessions with your coach and client respectively. Each session includes structured debriefing and reflection on each experience and permission to record your sessions, so you get the opportunity to deepen your learning even further by listening back to your own and your partners’ coaching sessions.
Coach the Person, Not the Problem is one of those books that every coach needs to have in their professional library. But having it on your shelf is not enough. Through our combination training/peer coaching round, we want to make sure you not only read it, but also do it.
You also have the opportunity to join a separate Coach the Person, Not the Problem group mentoring session with Marcia (not included in the peer coaching round, but available for separate registration here) to learn from Marcia’s feedback on participants’ recorded sessions and live coaching and to ask your questions (an observer only session is also available here).
You can find more information about our Coach the Person, Not the Problem Combination Training/Peer Coaching Round and read testimonials from our pilot with the ReciproCoach group mentoring team here. If you already know you want to coach the person, rather than the problem, you can register directly here.
I participated in the pilot round, and without a doubt, it took my coaching to a new level. Thanks to this learning, I have a really deep, experiential understanding of coaching the who rather than the what, and while I still get sucked into the problem now and then, I definitely know when it happens, and with more practice, will avoid falling into that hole in the future. In fact, Marcia’s new WBECS Breakthrough Coaching training is an ideal follow-on – with an intensive 30 CCEs of approved training (the first module of which is free), it’s an opportunity to really hone the skills Marcia teaches (if you do sign up to the entire course, use the code BCRC100 to get $100 off for the WBECS Bundle Offer).
Supporting you in breaking through to transformational coaching,
